Spectral Imaging Room (SIR)

The Frontier of Multimodal Data Acquisition

The Spectral Imaging Room (SIR) is a specialized 54 m² facility added to the IXR Platform designed for high-precision, multi-source digital capture. By combining hyperspectral imaging, 3D topography, and high-resolution colorimetry, the SIR provides a comprehensive environment for material analysis, cultural heritage digitization, and industrial inspection research.

The RETURN Multimodal Capture System

At the heart of the SIR is the RETURN system, a state-of-the-art, conveyor-based scanning platform designed for the seamless co-registration of diverse data types.

Engineering Precision

The system relies on a custom-designed 6,500 mm conveyor with a usable width of 475 mm. To ensure « pixel-perfect » data fusion, the bench is engineered for extreme stability:

  • Speed Control: Variable up to 1 m/s.
  • Dimensional Stability: Deflection remains less than 0.5 mm even under load.
  • Geometric Integrity: This stability is critical for the « push-broom » acquisition method, enabling the reconstruction of coherent 2D images and the precise superimposition of 3D data onto hyperspectral cubes without distortion.

Integrated Linear Sensors

The RETURN system captures data line-by-line using four high-performance sensors:

  • 3D Profilometer: Line laser triangulation sensor (4,080 pixels/line) for high-resolution relief mapping.
  • Color Camera (HIK): MV-CL043-A1GC (4096 x 3 R,G,B pixels/line) for ultra-sharp chromatic detail.
  • Hyperspectral VNIR (Specim FX10): 1024 pixels/line across 224 bands (400–1000 nm).
  • Hyperspectral SWIR (Specim FX17): 640 pixels/line across 224 bands (900–1700 nm).

Matrix & Portable Imaging

Beyond the linear conveyor system, the SIR is equipped with matrix sensors for versatile, area-based acquisition:

  • SILIOS TOUCAN: A multispectral MFA (Multispectral Filter Array) camera for real-time spectral snapshots.
  • Specim IQ: A portable, handheld VIS/NIR hyperspectral camera, ideal for in-situ measurements and rapid prototyping.

Light & Material Characterization

To ensure the scientific validity of our captures, the SIR includes a suite of precision measurement devices used for calibration and optical characterization:

Device CategoryModelCapabilities
SpectrocolorimetersxRite EyeOne (1, 2, and 3)Precision color management and surface profiling.
SpectroradiometerJeti 1511 NIRHigh-accuracy light source measurement in the NIR range.
SpectroradiometerJeti Specbos 2501Comprehensive UV/VIS/NIR analysis.

Use Cases & Research Applications

The SIR is uniquely positioned to handle complex projects requiring Data Fusion:

  1. Material Analysis: Identifying chemical compositions via SWIR/VNIR.
  2. Surface Metrology: Correlating 3D texture with spectral signatures.
  3. Digital Twins: Creating high-fidelity, interactive models of physical objects with accurate optical properties.
